“Architect, urban designer, Professor Emeritus, Aurelio Galfetti, with his work and his thinking, has had the most significant influence on the architectural culture in the Canton of Ticino and Switzerland from the ’60s until today.

He studied architecture at ETH Zürich from 1954 to 1960 and in the same year opened his office in Lugano. He collaborated with Flora Ruchat and Ivo Trumpy from 1964 to 1970 and later from 1970 to 1978 with Livio Vacchini, Luigi Snozzi, Rino Tami and Mario Botta.

In 1984 he was visiting professor at the EPF Lausanne and 1987 at the UP8 in Paris. In 1996 Aurelio Galfetti, together with Mario Botta, founded the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, of which he was director from 1996 to 2001. From 2005 to 2007, he directed the ‘Master for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Urban Planning’ and then in 2008 the important Diploma on AlpTransit. Until 2018 he served as Chairman of the Diploma Committee.

His critical contribution to the debate on the complex relationship between architecture, territory and landscape and his consequent architecture has been a founding example for all those who wanted to train at the Academy in the last 25 years.

His major works took place in the city of Bellinzona, namely the single family dwelling Rotalinti (1960-61), the open-air swimming pool (1967-70), the central post office (1977-85); the restoration of Burg Castelgrande (1981-91). and in Lausanne is notable his office and commercial building Ulysses (1991-94).”
