Central Atlanta Library

Docomomo International alerts for the eventual intervention on Central Atlanta Library by removal of 23 textured precast panels, the addition of windows and the relocation of the front entry.

“The Atlanta Central Library is a building of international significance. Internationally, beyond being architecturally significant, Breuer’s Atlanta library is associated with Atlanta’s 20th century aspirations for international standing. It stands as the foundation for those aspirations into the 21st century.

Atlanta’s Breuer library is a sculptural building explicitly designed for its urban context and as an enduring statement on the role of civic institutions in civic life and the importance of literacy and learning. The removal of the irreplaceable exterior precast panels to add windows will do significant harm to the integrity of the building in an irreversible way and thus diminish its international standing and value to Atlanta and Fulton County.

It is understood that significant Breuer designed features on the library’s interior, particularly the two sets of concrete monumental stairs and other exposed concrete features are to be retained. You are to be commended for your approach to retaining those and other original features on the interior and exterior.”

Docomomo International is available for any kind of support that might be needed to protect this Historic Monument, in order to pay respect for the original Marcel Breuer plan.
