Tour: Summer Walk: South Islington & Finsbury
DATE: 2/6/2018
“This is a walking tour looking at post-war housing, with a focus on the differences between the north and south areas. Islington housing, to the north, was carried out under a stylistically contextual planning regime, while the earlier Finsbury housing, to the south of this, was for a brief period strikingly modern.
Because this is in an inner-city tour, the emphasis will be on infill housing, on sites mostly determined by pre-existing street layouts. Almost all the sites will have been built on at least once before. This sort of housing has been built at high density (100 ppa to 136 ppa) and the tour will cover about 20 schemes of varying scale.
It will be conducted by Docomomo.UK´s administrator, Philip Boyle, who worked in the London Borough of Islington Architects Department for 25 years. Research materials will be distributed to participants.
