Conference: Should Modern Movement Buildings Be Treated Differently?
DATE: 20/4/2017
On 20th April 2017 it was held the conference Should Modern Movement Buildings Be Treated Differently? with  Rodger Bowdler, Director of Listing at Historic England and John Allan of Avanti Architects and Founding Chair Docomomo-UK.

"A structured discussion to examine how we value and treat post-1945 buildings.

What weight should be given to age, virtuosity and fitness for purpose? Should a building’s ‘success’ be measured against the designer’s stated intentions, or the views of critics and historians? Is listing an insupportable burden in an Age of Austerity that can no longer afford monuments to Welfare? If technology and components in the mid-C20 were necessarily experimental and imperfect should they now be preserved? Is it in the spirit of ‘Functionalism’ to upgrade building components whenever possible? How does that fit with established principles of conservation? Do MoMo buildings need their own principles of conservation?"
