Querubim Lapa (1925 - 2016)
Querubim Lapa passed away on 2nd May, 2016
docomomo International wishes to convey the most sincere condolences at the passing of the great artist Querubim Lapa, to his family and friends.
Querubim Lapa was born in Portimão, in 1925. Having graduated in Sculpture (1947 - 1953) and Painting (1978), in ESBAL, Lisbon, he was an author of a multiple work – painting, drawing, sculpture, tile, engraving – but it was in the ceramics applied to architecture that he was distinguished himself.
He was one of the most influent Portuguese artists of the 20th century, not only because of his work, but also due to his attitude of permanent dissatisfaction with the established order and with a continuous view beyond the obvious, having participated in the modern revolution that was also extended to architecture.
Lisbon is today a richer place thanks to the artistic legacy he have left in its streets, avenues, schools and other public and private buildings, such as in the Hotel Ritz (1950s), in the Pastelaria Mexicana (1961), in the Reitoria da Universidade de Lisboa (1961), in the Palácio da Justiça de Lisboa (1969), or in the Metro Station Bela Vista (1998), among others.
The vigil will be held this tuesday, 3th May, at 17h, in the Basílica da Estrela.
docomomo will remember him with joy and proud.
