Conference: An Architectural Anthology
22nd November 2018, Fernando Távora Auditorium, FAUP, Porto, Portugal
DATE: 22/11/2018
The architects Paul Robbrecht and Johannes Robbrecht, from the architectural studio Robbrecht en Daem architecten presented “An Architectural Anthology”, on the 22nd of November, within the Cycle Matter: the white conferences, at the Faculty of Architecture of University of Porto (FAUP).

Conference synopsis
Under the heading An Architectural Anthology Paul and Johannes Robbrecht took the opportunity to express how their practice is defined by key themes that permeate its body of work, including fascination with numbers, collaborations with artists and dialogic approach to the old masters of architecture (Mies van der Rohe, Victor Horta, Henry van de Velde and Marcel Breuer).

The work of Robbrecht en Daem architecten, inception in 1975, intends to be timeless, durable and focused, but above all also subservient and discrete - in short, ‘An Unforgettable Place’.
The invariable quality of its oeuvre is the result of the precise and consistent architectural vision which the founding duo Paul Robbrecht (1950) and Hilde Daem (1950) characterised from the very beginning, and to this day forms the basis of their meticulous approach with an unique vision on the use of colour, proportion and materiality.
In 2002 Johannes Robbrecht (1977) joined the team of Robbrecht en Daem architecten, where he has worked as a partner since 2012.
A distinguishing feature of the practice are their cultural buildings, such as the concert hall in Bruges, archives and libraries, as well as the emblematic restorations of modernist masterpieces, including the Ghent University library by Henry van de Velde and a 1:1 model of the Golf Clubhouse by Mies van der Rohe in Krefeld (Germany). Since early 2016 the office has been working on a 55.000m2 media building for the Flemish broadcasting company VRT.
The work of Robbrecht en Daem has been recognized with multiple international prizes and distinctions, and continues to be published and exhibited internationally.
