Docomomo International wishes to convey the most sincere condolences at the passing of the Portuguese Professor and Architect, Francisco Barata Fernandes, to his family and friends.

Francisco Barata Fernandes (1950 - 2018), architect, graduated from ESBAP, doctorate at FAUP. 
He developed research on Architectural Heritage interventions and historical centres in Italy, as a research Fellow of Caloust Gulbenkian Foundation.
As a Full Professor, he was also President of the FAUP Scientific Council in the 2014-2018 term and a Chairman of the Faculty Board between 2006-2010.
Francisco Barata Fernandes was coordinator of the research team of PACT (Architectural Heritage, City and Territory) of CEAU/FAUP. Coordinator of the international partnership between USP/UP of "Architecture, Design and Representation: design methodologies towards teaching Project". He also participated in conferences, seminars and courses organized by different national and international Architecture Faculties.
Barata Fernandes published, among others, "Transformação e Permanência na Habitação Portuense – as formas da casana forma da cidade" (doctoral thesis), FAUP publicações, Porto, 1999.

From his career as an architect it is possible to highlight: Project for Cooperativa de Massarelos, Porto, (INH 1996 Prize); Conservation and restoration project of Santa Maria da Feira Castle; Recovery Project of Matriz de Vimioso Church; Rehabilitation project of Páteo de S. Miguel, Évora; Project for Cadeia da Relação square and Largo do Olival (Porto 2001); Project of Rua do Almada (Porto 2001); Project of Marginal of S. Paio Canidelo, V.N. Gaia (Polis Program).
In 2014, together with Nuno Valentim and José Luis Gomes (CEFA-UP), he was awarded the João de Almada Prize for the Rehabilitation of the 1928´s building at Rua Alexandre Braga, originally by Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva.
