docomomo International wishes to convey the most sincere condolences, at the passing of the Portuguese architect Manuel Gomes da Costa, to his family and friends.
Graduated from the formerly Oporto School of Fine Arts and considered one of the architects responsible for the introduction of the modern architecture in Algarve (the Southern region of Portugal), Manuel Gomes da Costa was greatly influenced by the modern movement international architects, especially those in Brazil, such as Óscar Niemeyer. Born in Vila Real de Santo António, he worked in Tavira, Olhão, Aljezur and Faro, the lattest being the city where he developed much of his work. Among other relevant projects, he was responsible for the expansion of Colégio de Nossa Senhora do Alto and specialized mainly in housing projects, having designed the Trident Building.
