Every two years DOCOMOMO organizes an international conference, providing an opportunity to inquire into a theme that deals with an important aspect of the modern movement. The conferences are also a platform where specialists from all over the world can meet, exchange knowledge and make contacts.

The two-day tours following the three days of the conference are an opportunity for the participants to visit the modern heritage of the region hosting the event.

Since 2006, an international student workshop is organized in the frame of the conference, gathering worldwide universities and schools of architecture to combine theory and practice on a case study with the participation of different generations of researchers in the field. The first workshop focused on the Ataköy neighborhood, in Istanbul; in 2008 it worked on the Lijnbaan/Coolsingel-strip in Rotterdam and in 2010 on the Colonia Cuauhtémoc in Mexico City.

ABOUT
Every two years docomomo (the international committee for documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement) organizes an international conference, bringing together docomomo members and friends from its 72 national Working Parties, as an opportunity for in-depth exploration of an important theme or aspect of the Modern Movement.

The forthcoming conference is being hosted by docomomo Slovenia and will take place at the Cankarjev Dom, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 28 to 31 August 2018, under the theme Metamorphosis. The Continuity of Change.

THEME

At the 15th International Conference in Ljubljana, docomomo will address the history of Modern Movement transformations. This will be done in relation to cultural and natural aspects within the overall continuity of change. Both theory and practice will be considered.
In 2018, docomomo will celebrate 30 years of effort to preserve and adapt the technical, social and aesthetic goals of the Modern Movement – values which have always been intrinsically intertwined with change. As Badiou put it, change is the law of the world; the absence of change is death. When we think, we think change (Introduction to the Philosophical Concept of Change, 2012).
Today we are experiencing a huge escalation of change in all areas of life, even surpassing the radical transformations that characterised the Modern Movement era of the mid-20th century; Kafka’s Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung, 1915) is becoming close to reality. Human and social values, authenticity and identity, are undergoing fundamental changes in their meaning or relevance. The difference between the original and its copy is waning. The social and aesthetic values of the Modern Movement, as well as its status as heritage and element of identity, are very much under attack. So, what does docomomo stand for in this rapidly changing context?

SUBTHEMES

1) Cities
Our cities are evolving in response to continuously changing forces. These involve many different layers of economics, politics and science. What can we learn from past experiences of the Modern Movement urban developments? How can we reconcile Modern Movement ideals and built legacy with the digital revolution, worldwide mobility, migration and increasing environmental awareness? How can our attraction towards the ever new, and incessant innovation, be reconciled with sustainable urban conservation? Which examples of success and failure can be identified?

Keywords: Neighbourhoods; Megastructures; Complexes; Multifunctionality; Urbanity; Urban planning; Public Space; Lifestyle; Infrastructures; Networks; Transport; Mobility; Density; New towns; Inner city; Suburbia; Civility; Digital technology.

2) Buildings
During the process of restoration or adaptive reuse, the paradigmatic challenge is to adapt the buildings concerned to different functions, users, lifestyles, environmental and safety standards. How can we select what must be preserved and what can be changed? How to combine preservation with legal energy efficiency directives? What are the most up-to-date technologies and processes of material selection that can improve the experience of living in modern buildings? How can new technologies and materials´ improvements be assessed? Within the decision-making process, how can we effectively address authoritative changes? How are interiors, well-being and atmospheres affected by these changes? Which are the most informative examples of modern architectural heritage restoration or adaptive reuse, and their successes and failures?

Keywords: Restoration; Conversion; Renovation; Reuse; Icon; Ordinary; Programme; Functionalism; Prefabrication; Construction; Technologies; Energy efficiency; Seismic Retrofit; Legislative impact; Safety; Interiors; Atmosphere; Furniture; Lighting; Arts.

3) Identity
Human migration plays a fundamental role in all societies today. The forced interaction of people and places is now increasingly central to the development of cities and architecture. In the context of a society substantially shaped by physical and virtual transfers, how can identity be created, from the generic to the specific? Which is the role of the architectural heritage? What can we learn from the Modern Movement ideals of equality and progress, nowadays still perceivable through its built legacy? In the fact of rapid and uncontrolled urbanization and the fragmentation of the urban and social fabric, how can a sense of community and solidarity survive in our ever more pluralistic societies? In this context, is it realistically possible to preserve character and memory in conservation and adaptive reuse projects? If so, is it possible to pinpoint clear cases of success and failure?

Keywords: Migration; Speed; Society; Culture; Aesthetics; Community; Civil Society; Appropriation; Occupation; Public; Co-presence; Identity; Representation; Collectivity; Authenticity; Ethics; Unity; Integrity; Society; Permanence; Ephemerality; Participation; Planning processes.

4) Environment
The accelerating processes of contemporary development, coupled with lack of commitment and responsibility, have created incredibly damage on an ever-vaster scale, including phenomena such as climate change, breakdown of traditional cultures, or hyper-individualization. Also, the overall context of the economic crisis requires a better management of natural resources. How can the modern built environment help foster a sustainable environment? How can we combine sustainability and modernity? Is it possible to identify exemplary cases (as less successful examples) of reuse projects set within different traditions, social and physical environments, and employing sustainable architecture and urban design to reflect local requirements?

Keywords: Nature; Earth; Ecology; Natural versus Artificial; Sustainability; Energy efficiency; Seismic Retrofit; Natural resources; Local resources; Climate change; Environmental damage; Tradition; Modernity.

DESCRIPTION
In pursuit of the mission of docomomo, as updated in the Eindhoven-Seoul Statement 2014, the theme of the 14th International Docomomo Conference will be Adaptive Reuse. The Modern Movement Towards the Future: "The aim is to promote the conservation and (re)use of buildings and sites of the Modern Movement, to foster and disseminate the development of appropriate techniques and methods of conservation and (re)use, and to explore and develop new ideas for the future of a sustainable built environment, based on the past experiences of the Modern Movement."

The Modern Movement has demonstrated its long term legitimacy, as a concept endowed with an extraordinary longevity. Relating technology, form and social commitment to one another, through an optimistic faith in progress, modern architects sought to attain new heights of functionality and flexibility in use. The challenge for today is how to deal with this modern legacy in relation to the continuously changing context of the current times, including physical, economic and functional changes, as well as fast-moving socio-cultural, political and scientific contextual values.

Preserving the architectural heritage of the 20th century requires us to take account both of the opportunity and the duty to reuse buildings which have lost their original function, which are physically and/or technically obsolete, and which no longer meet today’s ever-more demanding standards. Such matters as the demand for material and technology reuse and for spatial and functional transformations, and the updating of regulations concerning fire, seismic stability, user safety, energy efficiency and environmental comfort legislation, are all part of the contemporary agenda. This inevitably highlights the question of the value of the existing built fabric, which can be a strong resource that calls for our attention in terms of social, economic and environmental sustainability.

In its pursuit of the task of conserving and rebuilding, docomomo must itself be modern and sustainable in order to continue to fulfil the Modern Movement’s social and collective project, as modernity and sustainability are part of the primary nature of Modern Movement project itself. In our view, the Modern Movement still carries on today and into the future, as an ever-present social, spatial and technological project engaged with the community, constantly engaging with the challenge of creating a better place to live.

Contributions are invited to put together under discussion themes such as the interrelationship of modernity and modern heritage, economy and energy saving, the social mission of architecture and the responsibility of architects towards the future. These themes are intended to be discussed both as MoMo concepts, to be analysed chiefly through documentation, and as contemporary modern interventions, to be debated in accordance with the needs and conditions of today. As a multidisciplinary platform, this conference aims to investigate a cross-section of subjects that are raised by the challenge of preserving, renovating and transforming the Modern Movement legacy worldwide, alongside with the complex background of today’s changing times. In the end, the goal is to achieve a pluricultural comparison of standards and practices for intervention on 20th century heritage.

In pursuit of a holistic approach, the general theme of the conference will be elaborated through eight sub-themes: 1) Landscapes, 2) Cities, 3) Public Spaces, 4) Complexes, 5) Buildings, 6) Construction and Technology, 7) Interior Design and Furniture and 8) Theory.

DESCRIPTION
The Modern Movement challenged a millennium of classical values through a collective global revolution in technological, social, political and aesthetic spatial values. The magnitude and complexity of this confrontation between epochs multiplied when Modernity’s western values expanded into the Asian sphere.

The diasporas of Modernity and the resultant local interpretations of the movement are well documented and known. Even the moniker “International Style” presumed a singularity on a global scale, only to be tweaked and usurped by regional modern architects who would integrate modern values with regional sensibilities. But it is important to remember these exchanges and re- calibrations took place on the shared stage of a singular western culture.

The 2014 International Conference re-measures this expansion of the Modern ethos within a wholly different context of Asia.  Instigated by a geo-political expansionist policy, these colonial expansions produced violent confrontations and challenged the very cultural and heritage foundation of Asia. As a result, the relevancy of the Modern Movement—not as a style but as a way of thinking, a harbinger of contemporary values—was tested and fortified.  Predictably, Modernity in Asia grew and matured through this process of conflict and expansion and intrinsically took on very distinct identities in different regions. To comprehend the variety of Asian Modernism, it is vital to map a comparative analysis of each country´s Modern roots and major achievements.

The theme of Expansion and Conflict fundamentally interrogates the values and relevancy of the Modern Movement through the extreme cultural lens of Asia.  By this interrogation, we hope to secure its aspirational role in any culture and society. We would declare that conflict is not necessarily a pejorative but maybe a challenge for the future. It signifies a vigorous recognition of each culture’s robust and intrinsic values—the existing culture and modernism’s raison d’être.  As Modern Movement is asked to earn a space of its own by clashing with the existing intrinsic order, it does so by forming a new value system. Through this process, it grows to become a regional phenomenon and eventually gains the momentum necessary to develop and expand on its own.

1. Education and Theory
The difference of philosophies between the east and the west bears fruit to an evolving discussion regarding theories of space, tectonics and meaning. The linearity of approaching the modern movement must evolve to a lateral system that permits multiple relationships with cultural issues in conflict with the existing pattern. The practical integration of this expansive architectural education should be discussed as a pedagogical structure for Asia and worldwide.

2. Urbanism and Landscape
Urban planning and landscape have experienced a turbulent yet dynamic evolution in modern Asia and elsewhere. While Europe can reclaim the palimpsest of an existing city pattern, Asia, Africa and South America are literally defined by either colonial foreign entities or the new mode of western urbanism. What emerged from this binary system of colonial and western urbanism is an unconventional relationship between program, infrastructure and landscape which produced dynamic new urban typologies.

3. Conservation and ReUse
The rapidly changing city is the stage for repeated collisions between social and economic desires and historically-valued ideologies. It is within this context of conflict that the heritage of the modern movement must now expand. However, changing social and economic demands lead to frequent instances when the value of preserving and reusing modern building is not recognised. Conservation and reuse policy, legal action, public education, and awareness programs to sustain the exchange of opinion are therefore necessary.

4. Technology
The selection of buildings materials is traditionally depending on technology. However cultural implications and meaning are associated with the use of local and global, natural or industrial materials. Therefore, it is critical to understand expansion and conflict in terms of building construction. It is also critical to face modern technology from the contemporary point of view of rehabilitation and sustainability.

5. Asian Modernity
Is Modern Movement a western concept? Can one be Modern and non western? The definition of Asian Modern Movement begins with locating and defining the core values and ethos of modernity. These values aspire to be universal beyond local culture and geography. Therefore, one would contend if modernity has stopped being western-centric, and has become a universal set of values that can be appropriated by any region. Simultaneously, these values are mobilized and activated through specific vehicles of local history, culture and resources. Asian modernity would represent the most extreme and challenging of these cultural vehicles.
