Henry Klumb House, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Docomomo International regrets to inform that Henry Klumb House in San Juan, Puerto Rico, built in 1949 by the renowned German-born architect Henry Klumb, a former student and chief draftsman of Frank Lloyd Wright, was destroyed by fire on 10th November 2020. Henry Klumb designed the home for himself after he settled in Puerto Rico in 1944. The Klumb House was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and The World Monuments Fund added the house to its 2014 World Monuments Watch list, which helps in the process of gathering funds to restore monuments. The Norwegian Government has decided to demolish one of its most important modernist monuments. A monument by the architect Erling Viksjø, with contributions by Carl Nesjar and Pablo Picasso. Docomomo International is sorry to inform that, after the validation of the demolition permit of the Transgas Building (Prague, Czech Republic) on February 1st 2019, demolition works have been initiated this week. On February 6th, the developer Group HB Reavis announced they have decided to sell the Transgas building, which led to uncertainty regarding the course of events for the building itself. “Despite years of campaigning from architects and heritage bodies, demolition is now underway on Robin Hood Gardens, the post-war housing estate in east London designed by exponents of new brutalism, Alison and Peter Smithson. The Monument ‘1300 Years Bulgaria’ was built in 1981, to celebrate and symbolize the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian State’s foundation. Designed by the sculptor Valentin Starchev, this unique monument was conceived to be part of a large scale urban ensemble, which also includes the Bulgarian National Palace of Culture.
