docomomo International would like to raise awareness on the increasing deterioration faced by the Shukhov Tower (1922), in Moscow, Russia. Designed by the Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov (1853-1939) and known after his name, the Shukhov Tower is a globally renowned broadcast transmission tower from the early twentieth century that still remains an icon of Moscow, being one of the vertical dominants in the skyline of the city. Despite inappropriate works of restoration carried out in the 1970s and the subsequent damages by corrosion, it is undoubtedly a masterpiece of structural engineering and a representative example of the Russian architecture from the Modern Movement.
Its exceptional value comes from the innovative hyperboloid steel structure. The transparency and lightness of the structure evidence the prodigious skills of the Russian creators and represent their pioneering spirit and technical achievements.
In 2014, the Russian government commendably called for the Shukhov Tower’s restoration after the owner planned to dismantle and relocate it. However, plans for restoration remain unclear. Recently, the owner has installed emergency stabilization supports without full transparency and without consulting with experts, as far as we are aware. The protection of such a masterpiece should be ensured through comprehensive restoration plans created under the guidance of independent field experts, and full transparency in the restoration process.
The lack of a clear plan of action at the Shukhov Tower could lead to an irreversible loss not only to the city of Moscow, but also to the recent history of architecture and to the research of innovative technical achievements. Due to the need for ongoing vigilance for its protection, Shukhov Tower was recently enlisted as cultural heritage at risk in the 2016 World Monuments Watch, a biennial list created by the World Monuments Fund.
docomomo International addressed a letter to the President of the Russian Federation, Mr. Vladimir Putin, as previously done in 2014, in order to call once again for an immediate governmental intervention to prevent further damage of this relevant piece of built heritage.
Many organisations with an active voice around the world are very concerned about the fate of the Shukhov Tower and are joining forces to publicly advocate the urgent need of its conservation. docomomo International supports the initiatives against the dismantlement or demolition of the Shukhov Tower being carried out by the World Monuments Fund, the Shukhov Tower Foundation, the Constructivist Project and docomomo Russia.
