Preservation Campaign: Werdmuller Centre
by Roelof Uytenbogaardt, Cape Town, South Africa, 1975
docomomo South Africa called for help in effort to preserve endangered Werdmuller Centre in Cape Town. Heritage Western Cape was notified that the building’s owners (Old Mutual) want to tear it down and advised the undertaken of a Heritage Impact Assessment. Ashley Lillie (with Prof. Andre van Graan) wrote a draft for comment by interested and affected parties for the Heritage Impact Assessment, addressing the significance of the Werdmuller Centre as a Modernist architectural resource.
The impact assessment process undertaken from 2011-2013 resulted in 150 persons and organisations registering an interest or providing comments relating to the past, future and cultural significance of the Werdmuller Centre. Next step, Draft Phase One, available for comments, were published in September 2015 (attached below).
docomomo International fully supports this initiative for preservation of this prime example of South African Modern Movement architecture.
