Kantstraßengarage saved from demolition
by Hermann Zweigenthal, Berlin, Germany, 1929
Last year, Docomomo Germany and Docomomo International joined efforts and supports to protect this parking garage in Berlin from being demolished. The building’s owners want to tear it down, and they took the first step last month by applying to end its status as a landmark, granted in 1991. Their argument was that the structure was weakening and that repairs would be too costly for the income the garage generates.
Today Docomomo was informed that Kantstraßengarage is saved from demolition for now, but the future use is still open. A workshop to discuss the ideas about its future will be held on 1 and 5 December 2014.
