"This text of Pietro Maria Bardi (1900-1999) with original title "Cronaca di viaggio" was published in the Italian review “Quadrante” in September 1933. Bardi, a member of the Italian team, describes the work and generally the Greek experience of the members of the 4th International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) in Athens. Prominent journalist and intellectual, important art collector, art critic and cultural activist (and afterwards husband of the architect Lina Bo) Bardi linked organically with Italian fascism and simultaneously with modern Italian architecture. He and his team of “Quadrante” aspired to "a new architecture of the fascist era," a modern architecture "within the fascist revolution." In the Introduction of his translation into Greek Giacumacatos says that Bardi’s publication for the Athens 4th Congress is a revealing text with correct information and relief, charming places and people descriptions, an authentic "travel writing" for Greece 1933. One can say that the publication of this text in “Quadrante” finally released the emotion feelings, admiration and adoration for the Greek ancient world which had somehow stifled in the conference. For Bardi Athens’ CIAM confirms the dual status of Modern Italian (and generally modern) architecture, status simultaneously Classical and Mediterranean: Parthenon is without doubt the measure for determination of the classical origins of modern architecture."
