Reco.mo.mo: Reconstructie van modern erfgoed
Seminar 20 mei 2011, Utrecht
DATE: 20/5/2011

9th Docomomo Brazil Conference
June 7-10, 2011, Brasilia
DATE: 7/6/2011

Docomomo Scotland Lecture
25 August 2011
DATE: 25/8/2011
Dear docomomo members and friends
I am pleased to announce the next docomomo Scotland event. This will be a talk entitled
A Socialist America – The Influence of the USA on radical architecture in the 1920s USSR and Germany, by Owen Hatherley, on
25 August 2011 at 6pm at the Hunter Lecture Theatre, Edinburgh College of Art, Lauriston Place, EH3 9DF
“The Communist leader Earl Browder once said ´Communism is Americanism´. This counter-intuitive statement fits very closely many of the architectural ideas of the left-wing avant-garde in the 1920s, who morphed a variety of commercial, Americanised forms to fit their own ends: from quasi-architectural slapstick stage sets, to hybrid skyscrapers, to Taylorised social housing. This talk will discuss the architectural avant-garde’s fixation with the dreamlike possibilities in the ´bad new things´ of their day and ask whether any insights can be learned from that today.”
Owen Hatherley, a London-based freelance writer, has recently published two books,
Militant Modernism, a defence of modernism against its defenders, and
A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain, a selection of his columns originally published in Building Design magazine. He is also a regular contributor to the Guardian and the New Statesman, and he writes his own internet blog,
Sit down man, you´re a bloody tragedy at
blog.
Mr Hatherley is currently researching a PhD thesis on Americanism in the USSR and the German Weimar Republic.

Fitch Colloquium
DATE: 31/3/2012
Following World War II, the United States and Europe sought to address the dire need for public and affordable housing through new building. The decades after war saw the development of many innovative design, construction and social arrangements. This legacy represents an important part of our collective architectural and cultural heritage but its preservation is plagued by many practical and social issues. By bringing together American and International experts, the Fitch Colloquium seeks to create a dialogue about the preservation of these buildings, which are at the intersection of social, physical, cultural and architectural values.
